SUMMARY:The Music of Advent
DESCRIPTION:Advent means “coming” as we celebrate the “coming” of Christ at Christmas\, on Judgment Day\, and in our hearts through his Word.\nEach Advent season we have three opportunities to gather together during the middle of the week and prepare ourselves for his first coming into this world through the use of classic music written by famous composers.\nOn Wednesdays\, December 5th\, 12th\, and 19th\, come over to Living Word at 6pm to enjoy a unique worship experience\, surrounded by the Advent and Christmas music of Georg Philipp Telemann and wrapped around the Word of God.\nThis 30-40 minute worship service will be a great way to relax with the message of salvation in Christ during a hectic time of year.

SUMMARY:Thanksgiving Eve
DESCRIPTION:“Consider the great love of the LORD.” \nThere are plenty of Psalms in the Bible that highlight God’s love.  But there are few that do that with so many examples as Psalm 107.   \n\nFive times the psalm writer tells stories about how the Lord comes through for his people\, giving them every reason to praise his name.  In fact\, one of the refrains in that psalm is\, “Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love.”\n \nThis Thanksgiving Eve\, (11/21/18 @ 6pm) “Let us give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love” by joining together in worship and marveling at all of the amazing things the Lord has done for us!\n \nPsalm 107\n\n1 Give thanks to the LORD\, for he is good;\nhis love endures forever.\n2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this-\nthose he redeemed from the hand of the foe\,\n3 those he gathered from the lands\,\nfrom east and west\, from north and south. \n4 Some wandered in desert wastelands\,\nfinding no way to a city where they could settle.\n5 They were hungry and thirsty\,\nand their lives ebbed away.\n6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble\,\nand he delivered them from their distress.\n7 He led them by a straight way\nto a city where they could settle.\n8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love\nand his wonderful deeds for men\,\n9 for he satisfies the thirsty\nand fills the hungry with good things. \n10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom\,\nprisoners suffering in iron chains\,\n11 for they had rebelled against the words of God\nand despised the counsel of the Most High.\n12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;\nthey stumbled\, and there was no one to help.\n13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble\,\nand he saved them from their distress.\n14 He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom\nand broke away their chains.\n15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love\nand his wonderful deeds for men\,\n16 for he breaks down gates of bronze\nand cuts through bars of iron. \n17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways\nand suffered affliction because of their iniquities.\n18 They loathed all food\nand drew near the gates of death.\n19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble\,\nand he saved them from their distress.\n20 He sent forth his word and healed them;\nhe rescued them from the grave.\n21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love\nand his wonderful deeds for men.\n22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings\nand tell of his works with songs of joy. \n23 Others went out on the sea in ships;\nthey were merchants on the mighty waters.\n24 They saw the works of the LORD\,\nhis wonderful deeds in the deep.\n25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest\nthat lifted high the waves.\n26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;\nin their peril their courage melted away.\n27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men;\nthey were at their wits’ end.\n28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble\,\nand he brought them out of their distress.\n29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;\nthe waves of the sea were hushed.\n30 They were glad when it grew calm\,\nand he guided them to their desired haven.\n31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love\nand his wonderful deeds for men.\n32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people\nand praise him in the council of the elders. \n33 He turned rivers into a desert\,\nflowing springs into thirsty ground\,\n34 and fruitful land into a salt waste\,\nbecause of the wickedness of those who lived there.\n35 He turned the desert into pools of water\nand the parched ground into flowing springs;\n36 there he brought the hungry to live\,\nand they founded a city where they could settle.\n37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards\nthat yielded a fruitful harvest;\n38 he blessed them\, and their numbers greatly increased\,\nand he did not let their herds diminish. \n39 Then their numbers decreased\, and they were humbled\nby oppression\, calamity and sorrow;\n40 he who pours contempt on nobles\nmade them wander in a trackless waste.\n41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction\nand increased their families like flocks.\n42 The upright see and rejoice\,\nbut all the wicked shut their mouths. \n43 Whoever is wise\, let him heed these things\nand consider the great love of the LORD.

SUMMARY:Reformation Celebration
DESCRIPTION:At the end of October every year\, we praise our God in remembrance of the beginning of the Reformation.\nThe Reformation of the Church is a period of time in 16th century Germany when God drew people back to his truth through the powerful Word of God.  Martin Luther was the key player of this “movement\,” but he certainly isn’t the focus of our attention or our celebration.  The Lord is.  What Jesus has done and how he continues to proclaim that message to us is the reason why we gather together every Sunday and honor his name in every way we can.\nTo make the most of this Reformation Sunday (this year it’s on 10/28/18)\, we will have a meal after Bible Study / Bible Roots that features food from Germany and the surrounding areas.  Feel free to bring a dish to share or just show up to eat.\nWe will also be having Reformation-themed door prizes\, trivia\, and music – all starting around 11:45am.  Don’t miss this crowd-favorite event and bring your friends and family members along with you!

SUMMARY:Golden Age of the Prophets
DESCRIPTION:There was a time in the Old Testament when the prophets of the Lord thrived.  Israel’s kings still persecuted them and the people didn’t always listen\, but the Lord blessed this period in history with a degree of “success” through the powerful working of his Word.\nThis Golden Age of the Prophets is recorded for us in 1 Kings 17 through 2 Kings 6.  And the two main heroes in these stories are Elijah and Elisha.\nThis fall join us on Sunday mornings as we immerse ourselves in the miracles\, the judgments\, the rescue missions\, and the amazing stories of these servants of God and how the Lord worked through them.

SUMMARY:Easter Week Events
DESCRIPTION:This is it!  The best week of the year!  \nTo celebrate Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and rising from the dead we have a few events and worship opportunities that everyone is invited to.\nEaster for Kids\nSaturday 3/24/18 from 9:30-11:30am\nThis is a great way for kids to learn about the most important moments of Jesus’ life\, death\, and resurrection in a fun and safe environment.  Stories\, crafts\, snacks\, games\, songs and more all for free!  No need to pre-register\, just show up and sign in! \nMaundy Thursday\nThursday 3/29/18 @ 6pm\nThe night Jesus first gave the Lord’s Supper to his disciples\, washed their feet\, and was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane gives us plenty of reasons to worship him together.  The word “maundy” comes from a Latin word that means “command.”  On that Thursday Jesus commanded his disciples to do two things: 1) Follow my example and 2) Do this (the Lord’s Supper) in remembrance of me. \nGood Friday\nFriday 3/30/18 @ 6pm\nIn the most somber worship service of the year we celebrate Jesus’ death on the cross.  His death paid for all of our sins and that’s why it’s “good.”  It’s not the most pleasant of pictures to bring to mind\, but it is necessary to understand the cost of our forgiveness if we are going to appreciate the glory of the resurrection. \nEaster Sunday\nSunday 4/1/18 – breakfast @ 7:30am and worship @ 9am\nEveryone is invited to an Easter breakfast of waffles\, bacon\, eggs\, ham\, fruit and all the fixin’s put on by the men of Living Word.  After breakfast we will gather together for the greatest worship celebration of the year: the commemoration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead!

SUMMARY:Lent 2018 - "He was crucified under Pontias Pilate..."
DESCRIPTION:The season leading up to Easter has been called “Lent” for centuries.  During this time of year we have the opportunity to worship together for six consecutive Wednesday evenings.  The week ahead of Easter we then meet on Thursday to celebrate the first time Jesus gave his disciples the Lord’s Supper and then again on Friday to commemorate the crucifixion of our Lord. \nOur theme is a phrase taken from the Nicene Creed: “Crucified under Pontius Pilate….”  This Roman governor in Jerusalem played a major role in the trial\, condemnation\, and crucifixion of Jesus.  The focus will be on Jesus\, of course\, but Pilate’s words and actions will lead us through these last few tumultuous hours of Jesus’ life and death – culminating in his resurrection. \nEach worship service will start at 6pm and last about 45 minutes. \nFebruary 14 – Midweek Lent \nFebruary 21 – Midweek Lent \nFebruary 28 – Midweek Lent \nMarch 7 – Midweek Lent \nMarch 14 – Midweek Lent \nMarch 21 – Midweek Lent \nMarch 29 – MAUNDY THURSDAY \nMarch 30 – GOOD FRIDAY \nApril 1 – EASTER SUNDAY [breakfast: 7:30am & worship: 9am]

SUMMARY:Advent with Mendelssohn
DESCRIPTION:Join us on three successive Wednesdays: November 29th\, December 6th\, and December 13th\, for brief\, quiet\, meditative worship services during the season of Advent.  The music of Felix Mendelssohn – an 19th century Lutheran composer – will be featured as we focus on the coming of the Lord into the world and the miracle of his birth as a real human being.  \n \nTake a mid-week break from the hectic holiday schedule and spend some time in God’s Word!\n\nWorship starts at 6pm and lasts for a little over 30 minutes. \n\nA little more about Felix Mendelssohn with excerpts from Britannica.com:\n\nFelix was born of Jewish parents\, Abraham and Lea Salomon Mendelssohn\, from whom he took his first piano lessons. Though the Mendelssohn family was proud of their ancestry\, they considered it desirable in accordance with 19th-century liberal ideas to mark their emancipation from the ghetto by adopting the Christian faith. Accordingly\, Felix\, together with his brother and two sisters\, was baptized in 1816 as a Lutheran. In 1822\, when his parents were also baptized\, the entire family adopted the surname Bartholdy\, following the example of Felix’s maternal uncle\, who had chosen to adopt the name of a family farm.\n\nMendelssohn was an extremely precocious musical composer. He wrote numerous compositions during his boyhood\, among them 5 operas\, 11 symphonies for string orchestra\, concerti\, sonatas\, and fugues. Most of these works were long preserved in manuscript in the Prussian State Library in Berlin but are believed to have been lost in World War II. He made his first public appearance in 1818—at age nine—in Berlin.\n\nMendelssohn also became active as a conductor. On March 11\, 1829\, at the Singakademie\, Berlin\, he conducted the first performance since Bach’s death of the St. Matthew Passion\, thus inaugurating the Bach revival of the 19th century.\n\nSome of his more famous works are: an oratorio on the prophet Elijah\, “Songs without Words\,” a musical score on “A Midsummer Night’s Dream\,” and a number of symphonies.  Felix also wrote a lesser known symphony based on “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” called the Reformation Symphony that was in tribute to the faith he and his family held dear.
